  • Angels' Taylor Ward: Hits first spring homer

Ward went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk Sunday in an exhibition loss to the Dodgers.

Ward accounted for the Angels' only run of the game with his 399-foot solo shot to center field in the third inning. The veteran outfielder has gone deep just one time this spring, but he's hit well with a .275/.370/.425 slash line over 46 plate appearances. Ward batted leadoff Sunday, and it appears he'll open the campaign in that position in the batting order after primarily hitting third last season.

  • Angels' Jose Soriano: Ends spring on high note

Soriano allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out two batters over 5.1 innings in an exhibition start against the Dodgers on Sunday.

Soriano held the Dodgers scoreless until Max Muncy tagged him for a solo home run in the fifth inning. That was the only run the right-hander allowed in the outing, and he worked up to 85 pitches (including 51 strikes) in his final spring tune-up. Soriano finished the exhibition slate with a 3.60 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 21:10 K:BB over 20 innings, and he's slated to next take the mound in the Angels' third game of the regular season, which will take place Sunday in Chicago against the White Sox.

  • Angels' Carl Edwards: Signs minor-league deal with LAA

Edwards and the Angels agreed on a minor-league contract Sunday, Aram Leighton of JustBaseball.com reports.

Edwards and the Angels' deal comes just 13 days after the right-hander committed to playing for the Tigres de Quintana Roo of the Mexican League on March 10. It's unclear why Edwards never reported to the Mexican League, but he will now stick around the United States, likely reporting to Triple-A Salt Lake to open the 2025 campaign. The 33-year-old spent the majority of the 2024 season with Triple-A Iowa, producing a 1.85 ERA and 1.45 WHIP with 22 strikeouts over 24.1 innings in 20 appearances out of the bullpen.

  • Angels' Ian Anderson: Acquired by Halos

The Angels acquired Anderson from Atlanta on Sunday in exchange for lefty Jose Suarez, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.

Anderson had a 2.65 ERA over 17 innings during spring training, but his command was all over the place with 18 walks. The right-hander is out of minor-league options, and Atlanta's decision to trade him is a clear indication he wasn't going to make the Opening Day roster. Anderson should have a better chance of sticking in the majors with Los Angeles.

  • Angels' Yusei Kikuchi: Concludes spring with five frames

Kikuchi tossed five innings against Colorado in a Cactus League contest Friday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out five batters.

Kikuchi finished the exhibition slate in good form, and he was able to work up to 88 pitches. The southpaw got 13 whiffs among those offerings, including seven with his slider. Of note, Kikuchi threw only two sweepers Friday -- he's been tinkering with the pitch this spring as a potential addition to his arsenal. The veteran hurler's next time on the mound is slated for Opening Day against the White Sox.

  • Angels' Scott Kingery: Outrighted to Salt Lake

Kingery cleared waivers Saturday and was sent outright to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Kingery was dropped from the Angels' 40-man roster Monday after going just 4-for-29 during spring training. However, he finished the Triple-A season with an .826 OPS across 507 plate appearances last year, and a similar output in 2025 could allow him to return to the majors for the first time in four years.

  • Angels' Kyle Hendricks: Wraps up strong spring

Hendricks completed five innings against Texas in a Cactus League game Friday, allowing one run on six hits and no walks while striking out five batters.

Hendricks yielded just one extra-base hit (a double) and didn't issue any free passes. The veteran righty finished spring play with a 2.41 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 16:3 K:BB over 18.2 innings. Hendricks has posted an ERA of 4.77 or higher and a K/9 of 6.5 or lower in three of his past four regular seasons, so fantasy managers have reason to be wary of rostering him. That said, he consistently posted reliable ratios early in his career, and Hendricks could benefit from a chance of scenery to Los Angeles after spending his first 11 major-league campaigns with the Cubs.

  • Angels' Zach Neto: Continuing to make progress

Neto (shoulder) has been throwing across the diamond in addition to participating in other defensive drills, Jack Janes of The Sporting Tribune reports.

Neto began throwing from shortstop to first base this week after being limited to shorter throws during the first half of March. The 24-year-old is also doing "just about every defensive drill that the rest of the team is doing" aside from throwing and was recently cleared to take swings off a hitting machine. It's not yet clear when he'll be able to face live pitching, and Neto remains likely to begin the season on the injured list, but he continues to be described as "ahead of schedule" in his rehab from the right shoulder surgery he underwent last November. Neto made it clear that he's pleased with his progress to this point, saying, "Honestly, I feel really great with my shoulder and where it's at. I'm feeling way stronger since when I first walked in here. I'm trusting our training staff and our coaches to get me in the right spot. I'm feeling great every day I walk in here."

  • Angels' Jo Adell: Busts out of spring slump

Adell went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, two total runs and two total RBI in Wednesday's Cactus League victory over Cleveland.

Adell came into the game struggling at the plate, but he created reason for optimism with his big performance Wednesday. The 25-year-old still has a meager .164/.190/.345 slash line this spring, but Adell does rank second on the club with three home runs and 12 RBI. Per Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register, the Angels haven't yet decided how they'll handle center field this season, but both Adell and Mickey Moniak are likely to spend time at the position now that Mike Trout is shifting to right field.

  • Angels' Travis Blankenhorn: Gets MiLB deal from Halos

The Angels signed Blankenhorn to a minor-league contract March 6, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

Blankenhorn has seen spot duty at the major-league level in each of the last five seasons, slashing only .154/.230/.264 in 49 contests. The 28-year-old will give the Angels some utility depth at Triple-A Salt Lake.

  • Angels' Kyren Paris: Strengthens case for roster spot

Paris went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and four RBI in Monday's Cactus League win over Arizona.

Paris doubled home a run in the second inning and cleared the bases with a three-run double in the ninth. The 23-year-old struggled mightily during stints in the majors each of the past two seasons, slashing a collective .100/.214/.165 with a 32.4 percent strikeout rate over 105 plate appearances. However, Paris worked on his swing mechanics during the offseason, and the results have been promising during the exhibition slate. He leads the Angels with 12 RBI during spring play and is slashing .364/.432/.697 with two home runs, 11 runs and three stolen bases. Paris has a chance of breaking camp with the big club, as Los Angeles will need to lean upon its infield depth early with Zach Neto (shoulder) expected to begin the campaign on the IL and Yoan Moncada (thumb) uncertain to be ready for Opening Day.

  • Angels' Chase Silseth: Sent down to minors

The Angels optioned Silseth to Triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday.

Silseth entered camp with a chance to win the fifth spot in the rotation, but he didn't pitch well, allowing 16 runs (15 earned) while walking 10 over 13 Cactus League innings. The competition for the final spot in the Angels rotation is now down to Reid Detmers and Jack Kochanowicz.

  • Angels' Scott Kingery: Bumped from 40-man roster

Kingery was designated for assignment by the Angels on Monday.

Kingery was in the mix for the starting shortstop gig early on in camp, but he appears to have lost out on the job after being booted from the 40-man roster to make room for the acquisition of Angel Perdomo from Atlanta. Kingery would begin the 2025 season with Triple-A Salt Lake and would be a candidate for a mid-season promotion if he goes unclaimed on waivers.

  • Angels' Angel Perdomo: Dealt to Halos

Perdomo was traded to the Angels from Atlanta on Monday in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Perdomo has been putting together a solid spring and was in position to win a bullpen spot with Atlanta. He should still be in a decent spot to make the Opening Day roster considering Los Angeles is somewhat lacking in proven bullpen arms behind Kenley Jansen.

  • Angels' Michael Petersen: Optioned to Triple-A

The Angels optioned Petersen to Triple-A Salt Lake on Monday.

A waiver claim in February, Petersen has had a good spring in yielding just two runs with a 7:2 K:BB over 5.2 innings, but it wasn't enough to land a spot in the Halos' Opening Day bullpen. He'll provide relief depth at Salt Lake.

  • Angels' Yoan Moncada: Fields grounders Monday

Moncada (thumb) fielded grounders Monday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

Moncada did not hit or throw, as he's not ready for that yet since it's his right thumb that's bothering him. It's not yet clear when he'll be ready for full baseball activities and games, but Moncada still hopes to be ready to go on Opening Day. If Moncada needs time on the injured list, the Angels would likely use Luis Rengifo at third base, with Tim Anderson entering the lineup at second base.

... See More ... See Less
  • Angels' Tim Anderson: Could start at second base

Anderson might be the Angels' Opening Day starter at second base due to Yoan Moncada (thumb) being a question mark for the beginning of the season, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

Moncada may be destined for the IL due to a thumb injury, which would likely mean that Luis Rengifo will become the starter at the hot corner at the beginning of the campaign. That could open up the second-base job for Anderson, who has been getting some reps at the keystone this spring despite playing only two regular-season games there to this point in his nine years in the big leagues. If the second-base role does become available, Christian Moore and Scott Kingery, among others, could also be candidates for the position, but Anderson has done enough this spring to have his name called, as he's slashing .243/.300/.351 with a home run and two stolen bases over 40 plate appearances.

  • Angels' Reid Detmers: Looks good in piggyback role

Detmers pitched four innings in a Cactus League contest against the Padres on Sunday, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and no walks while striking out four batters.

Kyle Hendricks began the game with five frames for the Angels, and Detmers followed by pitching the remaining four innings. The lefty is locked into a competition with Jack Kochanowicz for the final spot in the Angels' rotation, and both pitchers have made a strong case this spring. Detmers has posted a 2.30 ERA and 12:2 K:BB over 13.2 innings while Kochanowicz has a 2.92 ERA and 7:4 K:BB across 12.1 frames. Jack Janes of The Sporting Tribune reports that the Angels are considering using whichever of the two pitchers doesn't get the rotation spot as a long reliever, though it's not clear if the team is leaning toward Detmers to come out of the bullpen since he's worked in relief in three out of his five Cactus League appearances, while Kochanowicz has started in all four of his outings.
