Penguins' Evgeni Malkin: Moves to IR
Malkin (upper body) was placed on inured reserve Sunday.
Pittsburgh activated Philip Tomasino (lower body) from the IR list in a corresponding move. Malkin will miss his fourth straight game versus Tampa Bay on Sunday. He has produced eight goals, 32 points, 71 shots on net, 29 blocked shots and 20 hits across 41 appearances this season. Malkin has been participating in practices, but it's unclear when he will be ready to return to the lineup.

Penguins' Evgeni Malkin: Unavailable Saturday
Malkin (upper body) isn't ready to return for Saturday's tilt against Ottawa, Seth Rorabaugh of Tribune-Review Sports reports.
Malkin is set to miss his third straight game. He has eight goals and 32 points in 41 appearances in 2024-25. Malkin did skate Saturday morning, so perhaps there's still a chance of him drawing back into the lineup Sunday versus Tampa Bay.

Penguins' Evgeni Malkin: Remains day-to-day
Malkin (upper body) is still considered day-to-day ahead of a back-to-back set against the Senators and Lightning on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, Michelle Crechiolo of the Penguins' official site reports.
While Malkin has practiced for two straight days, he hasn't been a full participant during line rushes, which raises doubts regarding his availability heading into Saturday's tilt. Still, once the world-class center is given the green light, he should retake his spot on the second line while returning to the No. 2 power-play unit.

Penguins' Evgeni Malkin: Unavailable Thursday
Malkin (upper body) is not in the lineup for Thursday's game versus the Oilers, Wes Crosby of NHL.com reports.
Malkin is set to miss a second straight game with the injury. His absence means Cody Glass will stay in a second-line role and Anthony Beauvillier will remain in the lineup. Malkin's next chance to play is Saturday versus the Senators, which is the first half of a back-to-back set.

Penguins' Evgeni Malkin: Game-time call Thursday
Malkin (upper body) will be a game-time decision for Thursday's clash with Edmonton, Penguins play-by-play announcer Josh Getzoff reports.
Malkin has missed just one game so far due to his upper-body injury and could be ready to retake his spot on the Penguins' second line Thursday. If the Russian center does return, Cody Glass would likely shift back to the winger, while Anthony Beauvillier would drop out of the top six. Prior to getting hurt, Malkin was struggling to score, logging just one goal in his last eight games, though he did chip in five helpers over that stretch.

Penguins' Evgeni Malkin: Limited at practice
Malkin (upper body) skated Wednesday but didn't participate in line rushes, Michelle Crechiolo of the Penguins' official site reports.
The fact that Malkin wasn't working in his usual second-line center spot doesn't bode well for his availability against the Oilers on Thursday, though he hasn't been officially ruled out. After questions about his durability throughout his career, the 38-year-old center actually played in all 82 regular-season games in each of the previous two campaigns -- a streak that came to an end against Columbus on Tuesday.

Penguins' Evgeni Malkin: Not available Tuesday
Malkin (upper body) won't play Tuesday versus the Blue Jackets.
Malkin will miss his first game of the season. The 38-year-old center participated in the morning skate Tuesday, so his absence is a bit of a surprise. He has logged seven points over his last nine outings.

Penguins' Evgeni Malkin: Nets PP goal Sunday
Malkin scored a power-play goal in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Islanders.
Malkin found the back of the net in the early stages of the third period when the Penguins had the man advantage, and his goal gave Pittsburgh a 3-0 lead. Malkin is up to eight goals this season, but there's no question the 38-year-old playmaker is going through his most productive stretch since October. He's cracked the scoresheet in five of his last six outings, tallying two goals and four helpers in that span.

Penguins' Evgeni Malkin: Offers helper in loss
Malkin notched an assist and three shots on goal in Saturday's 6-3 loss to the Islanders.
Malkin has found steady offense with a goal and four assists over his last five games. The 38-year-old center can still contribute, although not at as high a level as he's been known for in prior years. Overall, he has 30 points (seven goals, 23 assists) with 69 shots on net, 25 blocked shots, 18 hits, 16 PIM and a minus-16 rating over 37 appearances. His drop in shooting volume from 2.4 per game last season to under two per game in 2024-25, combined with a drop in efficiency, explains a large part of his decline on offense.

Penguins' Evgeni Malkin: Record-setting night
Malkin had two assists in a 7-3 victory over the Flyers on Monday.
With his first assist, Malkin became the third player in Penguins history with 500 power-play points (180 goals, 320 assists) in the NHL, joining Mario Lemieux (701) and Sidney Crosby (571). He has four points, including three assists, in his last four games, and 29 (seven goals, 22 assists) in 36 games on the season. But 11 of Malkin's points (two goals, nine assists) came in his first five games. Don't overrate him at this point in his career, especially if you're looking to bolster your lineup for a second-half run.

Penguins' Evgeni Malkin: Pots goal in overtime win
Malkin scored a goal on two shots in Tuesday's 3-2 overtime win over the Kings.
Malkin's goal tied the game at 1-1 in the second period. He's been okay in December, posting four points, nine shots on net and a minus-1 rating. It's a little disappointing that he's not more involved with the Penguins scoring four goals per game so far this month. Malkin has a total of seven tallies, 19 assists, 65 shots on net, 23 blocked shots and a minus-13 rating through 33 appearances this season.

Penguins' Evgeni Malkin: Deals assist Tuesday
Malkin provided an assist in Tuesday's 6-2 loss to the Avalanche.
Malkin has been held off the scoresheet over the previous two contests. He has a goal and six assists over his last 11 appearances, a decent but unremarkable level of offense for a top-six center. The 38-year-old has accumulated 25 points, 61 shots on net, 21 blocked shots, 14 PIM and a minus-13 rating over 30 outings this season.

Penguins' Evgeni Malkin: Keeps stacking up honors
Malkin scored a goal and added an assist in Tuesday's 5-4 overtime win over Florida.
Malkin has 24 points, including six goals, in 27 games in what is clearly a bounce-back year. He can also say that he's in the record books after beating Spencer Knight on Tuesday. Malkin has now scored on 150 different goalies in his long career. Alex Ovechkin (178 games) and teammate Sidney Crosby (150) are the only active players who have scored on as many goalies.

Penguins' Evgeni Malkin: Sets up game-winner
Malkin provided an assist, two shots on goal and two PIM in Friday's 2-1 win over the Bruins.
Malkin's goal drought is up to nine contests, but he has four assists over his last six games. The 38-year-old helped out on newcomer Philip Tomasino's third-period tally, which was the game-winner. Malkin didn't have a single-point game until Nov. 16 -- the lack of recent multi-point efforts is a little disheartening, but it's better if the 38-year-old is more consistent on a game-to-game basis. For the year, he's at five tallies, 17 helpers, 53 shots on net, 19 blocked shots, 14 PIM and a minus-11 rating through 25 outings.

Penguins' Evgeni Malkin: Draws power-play helper
Malkin recorded a power-play assist, two hits, two PIM and a minus-2 rating in Friday's 4-1 loss to the Jets.
Malkin has been in a bit of a rut with just two helpers over his last six contests. This was his first power-play point since Nov. 5. The 38-year-old center now has 20 points (five goals, 15 assists), 48 shots on net, 18 blocked shots and a minus-10 rating through 22 appearances, though he's offset some of his struggles with seven multi-point performances.

Penguins' Evgeni Malkin: Pair of points in win
Malkin scored a goal on three shots, added an assist and went plus-2 in Friday's 4-2 win over the Capitals.
Malkin notched his seventh multi-point effort of the campaign in this contest. He set up an Erik Karlsson goal in the first period before scoring the game-winner himself in the third. While it's good to see Malkin be explosive on offense at times, he's also been held off the scoresheet in nine games. The 38-year-old center has five goals, 13 helpers, 37 shots on net, 12 blocked shots and a plus-1 rating over 16 appearances this season. He's a high-risk, high-reward fantasy option until he can get to more steady scoring production.

Penguins' Evgeni Malkin: Back on scoresheet in loss
Malkin delivered a power-play marker and added an assist in Tuesday's 4-3 shootout loss to the Islanders.
Malkin was credited with the primary helper on Sidney Crosby's second-period tally before the former potted his first goal on the man advantage this season. Malkin's 22:12 of ice time led all of Pittsburgh's forwards, and the hulking left-shot center spearheads the Penguins' attack with 16 points over 14 games. Overall, Malkin has collected four goals, 12 assists, five power-play points, 30 shots, five hits, 11 blocks and three takeaways while shooting at a 13.3 percent clip.

Penguins' Evgeni Malkin: Stands out in loss
Malkin scored a goal on two shots, added two assists, blocked two shots and went plus-2 in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Canucks.
Malkin nearly hurt himself on his goal, as his momentum carried him into the post and boards after he blew past the Canucks' defense. The 38-year-old has been a boom-or-bust player so far, with five multi-point efforts and five scoreless outings over 10 games. Even with streaky scoring, he has three goals, 14 points, 18 shots on net, eight blocked shots and a minus-3 rating this season. Malkin is locked in as the No. 2 center, and he's been one of few bright spots for the Penguins early in the campaign.

Penguins' Evgeni Malkin: Point streak ends Friday
Malkin didn't record a point nor attempted a shot in Friday's 4-1 loss to the Hurricanes.
Malkin was coming off a four-point effort in the win over the Sabres on Tuesday and had recorded four straight outings with two or more points, but the streak came to an end abruptly Friday in a game where the Penguins looked overmatched. Malkin has two goals and nine assists across six appearances so far in 2024-25.
