Sorokin (illness) won't be in the lineup for Saturday's road matchup against Utah.
The Islanders recalled Jakub Skarek on Saturday from AHL Bridgeport on an emergency basis. Sorokin has won his last two outings, including a 30-save shutout against Vegas on Thursday. He has a 13-13-4 record with a 2.83 GAA and a .902 save percentage through 30 appearances this season. Marcus Hogberg will face Utah on Saturday, while Skarek will be the backup.

Sorokin posted a 30-save shutout in Thursday's 4-0 win over the Golden Knights.
Sorokin earned his second shutout of the year and the 20th of his career in this performance against the NHL's top team. Given that he had allowed at least three goals in seven of his previous nine outings, this was a bit of a surprise performance, especially in hostile territory. Sorokin improved to 13-13-4 with a 2.83 GAA and a .902 save percentage over 30 starts this season. The Islanders' three-game road trip concludes Saturday in Utah, and it wouldn't be surprising to see Sorokin start that contest as well.

Sorokin has gone 4-6-0 with a 3.54 GAA and an .873 save percentage over his last 10 games. He's seen a heavy workload in the absence of Semyon Varlamov (lower body), and that may be impacting Sorokin's performance. Sorokin didn't have his best individual effort, but it was just enough to lift the Islanders to victory in what turned out to be a high-scoring matchup. Even though Sorokin's role as the Isles' primary goaltender isn't under any threat, it's worth noting his recent performances haven't been particularly good. He's posted a save percentage below the .890 mark in three of his last five appearances, a span in which he's gone 2-3-0 with a 3.42 GAA and an .873 save percentage.

Islanders' Ilya Sorokin: Tending twine against Boston
Sorokin led the Islanders onto the ice for Sunday's pregame warmups, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports, indicating he'll start on the road against the Bruins.
Sorokin has been held out of the win column in each of his last two starts, going 0-2-0 with a 2.05 GAA and .927 save percentage in appearances that both came against the Maple Leafs. The bottom line for Sorokin is grim. The Isles lack the kind of depth or offensive talent to compete most nights, and that means that Sorokin needs to be near-perfect to get his team a win. The Isles are tied for last in the Metropolitan Division, and their 14 wins tie them with Buffalo for the fourth-worst total in the NHL right now. They have scored just 103 goals in 39 games. Sorokin is an elite talent on a very bad team, and for the first time in his career, he isn't able to be a difference-maker for them. Now may be the time for keeper and dynasty managers to inquire about his availability, especially if they're rebuilding. Sorokin is just 29, and he has many, many great years ahead of him.

Overall, Sorokin is 11-12-4 with a 2.92 GAA and an .898 save percentage in 27 starts. It's the first time in his NHL career that his season save percentage has slipped below .909. His ratios reflect the struggles of his squad more than anything else.

Those six goals are the most Sorokin's allowed in a single game in 2024-25. The Russian netminder hasn't been at his best of late, going 2-3-0 over his last five appearances while posting an absurdly high 4.54 GAA and a poor .836 save percentage. The Christmas break should give Sorokin some much-needed rest amid this woeful stretch of form.

The Islanders seemed to have things well in hand when they took a 5-1 lead midway through the third period and chased Arvid Soderblom from the game, but the visitors caught fire late and scored the final three goals of the night, including two by Tyler Bertuzzi in the final 70 seconds. Since Semyon Varlamov (lower body) has been sidelined since late November, Sorokin has started seven straight games, going 4-2-1 with a 2.54 GAA and .911 save percentage. He could be feeling some fatigue, but it's not clear if the Islanders trust backup Marcus Hogberg enough to give Sorokin a breather.
