The Sabres fell apart after going up 2-0, and UPL had a rough night. He'd like to have a couple of those goals back. Luukkonen was coming off a 35-save shutout over Ottawa on Thursday, and he had won two straight. He's certainly talented, but playing behind the Sabres right now is an exercise in frustration for both him and fantasy managers.

Luukkonen was the first goaltender off the ice at morning skate and is expected to guard the road crease in Ottawa on Thursday, Lance Lysowski of The Buffalo News reports.
Luukkonen is 4-1-1 since snapping a nine-game losing streak Dec. 23, allowing 17 goals on 171 shots. The 25-year-old is 12-12-4 with one shutout, a 3.05 GAA and a .894 save percentage across 29 outings this season. The Senators are averaging 2.92 goals this season.

Luukkonen stopped 25 shots in regulation and overtime and three of four shootout attempts in Monday's 4-3 win over the Capitals.
The Sabres handed Luukkonen one-goal leads three times in the first two periods, and each time the netminder couldn't stop the Caps from tying it up. However, the 25-year-old was the sharper of the two goalies in the shootout. Over his last six starts, Luukkonen has gone 4-1-1 with a 2.81 GAA and a .901 save percentage, allowing three goals or less in five of those outings.

Luukkonen recorded his first win since Nov. 22 and was excellent in this contest. The only goal he surrendered was to Kyle Palmieri in the second period when Buffalo already had a five-goal advantage. This was also a huge bounce-back performance for Luukkonen, who, record aside, had posted a save percentage below the .720 mark in each of his last two starts while allowing 10 goals on 34 shots in that span. The Finnish netminder should remain Buffalo's top option between the pipes, but the team's overall struggles limit his upside considerably.

Luukkonen has been charged with the loss in each of his past eight appearances (0-6-2) while allowing 29 goals on 230 shots (.874 save percentage). That's dropped him to 8-10-3 with a 3.00 GAA and .896 save percentage across 22 outings in 2024-25. To be fair to Luukkonen, Buffalo is in the midst of an 11-game losing streak, so he's far from the only member of the Sabres who has left plenty to be desired recently. The Sabres will see if they can end their slump against the Maple Leafs, who have a 20-10-2 record and are tied for 17th in goals per game with 3.03.
