Top Sabres News

  • Sabres' Radim Mrtka: Three helpers Saturday

Mrtka notched three assists in WHL Seattle's 7-3 win over Vancouver on Saturday.

Mrtka has settled right back in for the Thunderbirds with six assists over five games since he was transferred back to the junior team from AHL Rochester. The Sabres prospect will continue to lead the blue line in Seattle for the remainder of 2025-26. As an import player, he will be eligible to suit up in the AHL before he's 20 years old, and that could lead to him playing for Rochester in 2026-27, as he probably doesn't have much left to learn in junior hockey.

  • Sabres' Alex Lyon: Slated starter Saturday

Lyon is expected to start on the road against Carolina on Saturday, per Ryan Henkel of The Hockey News.

Lyon has gone 0-0-3 over his past three appearances while allowing 10 goals on 96 shots (.896 save percentage). That rough patch has left him with a 3-4-3 record, 2.80 GAA and .915 save percentage through 10 outings overall. Carolina ranks fourth in goals per game with 3.62 this year.

  • Sabres' Stiven Sardarian: Big game for Michigan Tech

Sardarian scored twice and added an assist in Michigan Tech's 4-1 win over Northern Michigan University on Friday.

Sardarian opened the year with 11 assists in eight games before finally breaking through with his two goals Friday. The 22-year-old winger is in his senior year of college hockey, and his offense has been quality since transferring from the University of New Hampshire prior to 2024-25. Sardarian's signing rights are held by the Sabres, and it remains to be seen if he'll secure an entry-level deal after his collegiate season is over.

  • Sabres' Zac Jones: Up from minors

Jones was summoned from AHL Rochester on Friday, per Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald.

Rasmus Dahlin (personal) was placed on the non-roster list in a corresponding move. Jones has 13 assists in 11 appearances with Rochester this season. He recorded a goal and 11 points in 46 regular-season outings with the Rangers in 2024-25. Jones probably won't see more than third-pairing duties with Buffalo during Dahlin's absence.

  • Sabres' Rasmus Dahlin: Designated non-roster

Dahlin (personal) has been placed on the non-roster, injured reserve list Friday, per the NHL media site.

While Dahlin is in Sweden to attend to a personal matter, the team will need an extra defenseman on the 23-man roster. With the available spot, the Sabres recalled Zac Jones from AHL Rochester. As soon as Dahlin rejoins the team, he will be eligible to be taken off the non-roster list.

  • Sabres' Rasmus Dahlin: Stepping away from team

Dahlin will be returning to Sweden for personal reasons, Matthew Fairburn of The Athletic reports Friday.

There is no timetable for how long Dahlin will be away from the team, but it seems unlikely to be a short-term absence. Bowen Byram figures to see increased opportunities with the No. 1 power-play unit while Dahlin is on leave.

  • Sabres' Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen: Zero help from teammates

Luukkonen made 14 saves in a 3-0 loss to St. Louis on Thursday.

Luukkonen didn't face much rubber and honestly he wasn't stellar. The Sabres continue to have an odor to their game, and UPL hasn't been able to solve that problem since he returned from injury. Lukkonen is 1-1-1 with a 2.91 GAA and .877 save percentage. This could be a rough season.

  • Sabres' Jiri Kulich: On injured reserve

Kulich (ear) was placed on injured reserve Thursday, according to Rachel Lenzi of The Buffalo News.

Kulich's issue is related to fluid in his ears, the Sabres announced Wednesday. His placement on IR is presumably retroactive to Saturday, which is when Kulich was last in the lineup. He'll miss his second straight game when the Sabres face St. Louis on Thursday. When the 21-year-old is ready to return, he'll likely serve in a middle-six capacity.

  • Sabres' Tyson Kozak: Set to return Thursday

Kozak (lower body) is slated to return for Thursday's game against the Blues, Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports Radio 550 reports.

Kozak missed the last five games due to his lower-body injury, but he's set to be activated off injured reserve ahead of Thursday's matchup. He'll likely reclaim a bottom-six role now that he's been cleared to return. Over his first seven appearances of the season, Kozak recorded two goals, 19 hits and four blocked shots while averaging 9:52 of ice time.

  • Sabres' Jake Leschyshyn: Nets two goals in AHL loss

Leschyshyn scored twice in AHL Rochester's 5-3 loss to Syracuse on Wednesday.

Leschyshyn played his part for the Americans, but the rest of the team didn't add much offense. The 26-year-old forward is up to five goals and two assists over 11 games in his first year in the Sabres' organization. He could get a call-up to Buffalo at some point in 2025-26, though he didn't see any NHL action with the Rangers last year.

  • Sabres' Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen: Tending twine Thursday

Luukkonen will patrol the home crease for Thursday's matchup with the Blues, Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald reports.

Luukkonen has appeared in two games for the Sabres this season, in which he posted a 1-0-1 record to go with a 3.33 GAA. The 26-year-old backstop has reached the 50-game mark in each of his previous two years. Despite missing nearly a month of the 2025-26 campaign due to injury, he may still have enough time to hit that threshold again this season.

  • Sabres' Noah Ostlund: Pots first goal

Ostlund scored his first career NHL goal in Tuesday's 2-1 overtime loss to the Mammoth.

Skating in his 13th career game, and his fifth this season, Ostlund got a dose of good fortune to light the lamp for the first time. His initial shot from the slot sailed over the net, only for the puck to bounce into the air off the glass and wind up landing right at Ostlund's feet for a second chance. He tied the game midway through the third period. The 16th overall pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft hasn't been able to establish himself at the top level yet. However, he's had no trouble making an impact in the AHL, getting his promotion this season after recording two goals and seven points in six games for Rochester. With a spot in the middle six and on the second power-play unit, Ostlund could begin to make his mark for Buffalo as well.

  • Sabres' Alex Lyon: Takes tough loss Tuesday

Lyon stopped 33 shots in Tuesday's 2-1 overtime loss to the Mammoth.

The 32-year-old was locked in a goaltending duel with Karel Vejmelka through two periods before Nick Schmaltz opened the scoring early in the third. Lyon was still able to earn Buffalo a point even though the Sabres were outshot 12-3 in the final 20 minutes of regulation. Lyon has overtime losses in each of his last three straight starts. His record is at 3-4-3 through 10 outings with a 2.80 GAA and a .915 save percentage.

  • Sabres' Scott Ratzlaff: Secures monthly honor in ECHL

Ratzlaff was named the ECHL Rookie of the Month for October on Tuesday.

Ratzlaff posted a 3-0-0 record, 1.29 GAA and .966 save percentage over three October appearances with ECHL Jacksonville. The Sabres prospect should have a better path to consistent playing time in the ECHL this year, as AHL Rochester's crease is occupied by Alexandar Georgiev and Devon Levi. Ratzlaff is likely a few years away from competing for NHL minutes in Buffalo, though the team's crowded goalie pipeline, which also includes Levi and Topias Leinonen, could lead to a trade for one of those goalie prospects to free up minutes for the others.

  • Sabres' Alex Lyon: Set to face Utah

Lyon will tend the home twine Tuesday versus the Mammoth, Michael Augello of The Hockey News reports.

Lyon has lost back-to-back outings in overtime while allowing four goals in each game, and he's dropped three of his last four overall. The veteran netminder is 3-4-2 with one shutout, a 2.90 GAA and a .911 save percentage across nine appearances this season. He'll have his hands full against an 8-4-0 Mammoth club that is tied for 10th in the NHL with 3.50 goals per game in 2025-26.
