Devils' Jacob Markstrom: Starting Saturday versus Slovakia
Markstrom will patrol the Swedish crease versus Slovakia on Saturday at the 2025 Winter Olympics, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnetreports.
Markstrom will make his first start of the tournament for Sweden, as Filip Gustavsson, who started the first two games, is a healthy scratch. Markstrom is 15-13-1 with a 3.20 GAA and an .882 save percentage across 30 contests with New Jersey this season. Slovakia has won its first two games of the round-robin tourney, upsetting Finland 4-1 and knocking off Italy 3-2.

Devils' Jack Hughes: Hat trick of helpers against Latvia
Hughes supplied three assists and put a shot on goal in the United States' 5-1 win over Latvia in Olympic round-robin play Thursday.
Hughes led the United States in points Thursday with an assist on three of the team's last four goals. He slid the primary helper on each of Brock Nelson's two goals in the second period before sealing the hat trick of helpers with a secondary apple on Auston Matthews' power-play tally in the third. After missing New Jersey's final three games before the Olympic break, he showed no lingering signs of injury while skating on the productive fourth line for Team USA. He should remain in the mix to lead the United States in points for the Olympics if he can maintain a spot in the lineup moving forward.

Meier scored two goals in Switzerland's 4-0 win over France in the 2026 Winter Olympics on Thursday.
Meier scored two of Switzerland's four goals in this Olympic opener, finding the back of the net twice in the final 10 minutes of the contest. Meier should be one of Switzerland's most reliable offensive weapons in a tough matchup against Canada on Friday, a game where the Swiss will be massive underdogs.

Devils' Jacob Markstrom: Not starting after all
Markstrom won't start for Sweden during Wednesday's game against Italy at the 2026 Winter Olympics, Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press reports.
A previous report indicated that Markstrom would draw the start during Wednesday's tournament opener, but Filip Gustavsson will ultimately tend the twine against the host nation. Markstrom will still dress as the backup goaltender, and it's possible that he sees some playing time if the score gets out of hand.

McLaughlin (undisclosed) has been activated off long-term injured reserve and put on waivers Wednesday.
McLaughlin hasn't played yet this season due to the injury. He had two goals and three points in 14 regular-season outings between New Jersey and Boston in 2024-25. If he clears waivers, New Jersey will send him to AHL Utica.

Hughes missed New Jersey's final three games before the break, but he will be good to go for the beginning of the 2026 Winter Olympics. Kevan's freshman year has been largely unremarkable, with just six points (three goals, three assists) in 28 appearances. The 2025 second-round pick of the Devils has some obvious holes in his game, so he'll likely need plenty of time in the NCAA. A bad freshman year won't derail his development, but it'll be critical for him to show improvement in 2026-27.

Hischier has four goals and an assist over his last seven outings. The 27-year-old center is up to 19 goals, 42 points, 151 shots on net, 42 hits, 47 blocked shots and a minus-10 rating over 57 appearances. He'll now head to Italy to represent Switzerland at the Olympics.

Devils' Jake Allen: Comes up short against Isles
Allen stopped 11 of 13 shots in Thursday's 3-1 loss to the Islanders, with New York's final goal getting scored into an empty net.
The 35-year-old was locked in a 1-1 goaltending duel with Ilya Sorokin through two periods and even picked up an assist on Nico Hischier's tally, but Bo Horvat slipped a puck past Allen late in the final frame to put the visitors on top. Allen is probably looking forward to the Olympic break, having lost three straight starts and six of seven since the beginning of January while posting a 3.08 GAA and .880 save percentage.

White didn't make an appearance during this stint with the big club, serving as a spare defenseman. His time with the AHL during the Olympic break will prevent him from accruing time in regards to when he would need to clear waivers again.

Allen will defend the home crease against the Islanders on Thursday, Kristy Flannery of The Hockey News reports.
Allen has struggled since the beginning of the calendar year, going 1-5-0 with a 3.25 GAA and .883 save percentage over his last six starts. He'll have a favorable matchup in the Devils' final game before the Olympic break, as the Islanders are scoring 2.84 goals per game this year, which is tied for the eighth-worst mark in the league.

Lammikko's demotion will ensure he can keep playing during the NHL's Olympic break. However, it could be an indication that he's the odd man out following the Devils' acquisition of Nick Bjugstad from St. Louis on Wednesday. In his 24 games for New Jersey this season, the 30-year-old Lammikko failed to find the back of the net while recording 15 shots on net and two assists.

Bjugstad was acquired by New Jersey from St. Louis on Wednesday in exchange for Thomas Bordeleau and a conditional 2026 fourth-round draft pick.
Bjugstad had six goals, seven points, 25 PIM and 73 hits in 35 outings with St. Louis in 2025-26 before the trade. He'll probably be limited to a bottom-six role with the Devils, but that might still result in him getting more ice time than the 11:38 he averaged with the Blues this season.

He was locked in a goaltending duel with Elvis Merzlikins through two periods, but Markstrom saw his shutout slip away when Dante Fabbro snuck a shot through traffic early in the final frame.
